Biswajit Banerjee, D.Phil

Biswajit Banerjee is Chief Economist in the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic since August 2017. He was previously Chief Economist in the Bank of Slovenia (2014-2017) and in this capacity served as a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the European Central Bank in Frankfurt. Dr. Banerjee is a former senior staff member of the International Monetary Fund (1982-2008), where he led surveillance and programme missions to several countries in central and southeastern Europe. Notably, he was the IMF Mission Chief for Slovenia and Slovakia during their ERM II participation and preparation for euro adoption.

Dr. Banerjee is also affiliated with Ashoka University in Sonepat, India as Professor of Economics and additionally teaches a course at the Economics University of Bratislava. He has previously taught at Haverford College (2009-2014), the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (2010-2011), and University of Oxford (1977-1982).   

Dr. Banerjee read for the Bachelors and Masters degrees in Economics at the University of Delhi (St. Stephen’s College and the Delhi School of Economics, respectively), and went on to obtain the B. Phil and D.Phil degrees from the University of Oxford. He was awarded the Rhodes Scholarship in 1972.
